Domogled – Valea Cernei
The extensive beech forest complex with a considerable naturalness is located in the Southern Carpathians. Deep valleys with steep, at times rocky slopes characterise the landscape. The ridges and rock mark natural boundaries for the beech. Occasionally, the ancient beech forests are superseded by forests of slopes, screes and ravines, by oak forests, as well as spruce and pine forests. A diverse habitat mosaic generates a rich fauna and flora with rare and endemic species. Among them are 1,463 species of butterflies and numerous beetle species typical for primeval forests.
