Grumsin – World Heritage Route
Exceptional views of the glacier-formed landscape with its lakes, mires, and extensive forests await visitors to the World Heritage Route.
Starting from Altkünkendorf, the route bypasses the large meadow and mighty oaks, and enters Grumsin Forest, where it initially continues along the western edge of the Natural World Heritage property. While the beech forests to the path's left still bear visible signs of forestry, it is unmistakable that nature is now taking over here. Fallen giants have left gaps in the forest canopy - evidence of wilderness in the making. Where now the rays of light permit, young beech trees strive upwards and compete to close the gaps. Now and again there are glimpses of small kettle bogs, which bear witness to the interaction with lakes, mires, and swamps that is so typical of lowland beech forests. Further on towards Groß Ziethen, the terminal moraine landscape unveils its fascinating lakes. The return loop to Altkünkendorf, following the yellow beech leaf, runs through commercial forest in the nature conservation area, but still lacks nothing in terms of typical impressions. Once again, it is the carrs and lakes that enrich the beech forest landscape and make it unforgettable.
Each season offers its very own highlights: In spring, blooming carpets cover the forest floor. The trumpeting calls of the cranes, the drumming of woodpeckers, and the croaking of frogs reverberate through the forest, take on a characteristic sound at the sight of lakes, swamps, and beech forests. In summer, it is a lush deep green that dominates the ambience. A green that turns a heady shade of gold in autumn, when the cranes head south again.
Please note that access to the Grumsin Natural World Heritage property itself is not permitted. Within its boundaries, natural development processes have absolute priority. Only those who accompany an authorised guide can experience the emerging wilderness directly. There is, however, also plenty of opportunity to get a taste of World Heritage in the neighbourhood and especially on the World Heritage Route.

Into the wild woods - there’s an App for that
Each German component part has a designated World Heritage Route for visitors to explore.
On each of these memorable routes, the app provides a wealth of additional information on the typical and unique features of the respective regional beech forests, and on numerous interesting attractions within the protected area (POI - Point Of Interest).
