The Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians

In July 2007, the World Heritage Committee inscribed the ‘Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians’ as a Natural World Heritage property on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The initial properties of this transboundary World Heritage Site comprised five properties within the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, which harbour the largest European primeval beech forest and the property Stuzhytsia-Uzhok near the Slovak and Polish borders.

These areas, located in mountainous and sub-alpine altitudes of up to 1,940 metres, primarily represent the mountain beech forest. The European Beech almost reaches its north-eastern distribution limit here. They form a significant proportion of the vegetation.
