Paklenica National Park

The inaccessible Velebit Mountains in the Dinaric Alps harbour one of the oldest beech forests. In this beech forest, which has been unexploited for more than 100 years, trees as old as 200 to 250 years can be found. Mediterranean, alpine, and continental influences shape its extraordinary character. The area is crossed by intermittently dry mountain streams. Numerous endemic species as well as 343 vertebrate species alone, including 24 bat species, make the area a biodiversity hotspot.
