World Heritage Beech Forests

Once they grew everywhere, but today beech forests belong to the most endangered habitats.

Beech forests are Europe’s natural wilderness. The World Heritage Site comprises the few remaining primeval beech forests and centuries-old European beech forest areas unaltered by humans.

The European Beech is endemic to Europe. Two things make it particularly special: It is extremely assertive and exceptionally adaptable.
